Suemay is an experienced documentary filmmaker, having directed premium series and single films for major platforms such as Netflix, ESPN Films, HBO Max, BBC, and Channel 4. Her filmography spans a wide spectrum from character-driven sports narratives to premium crime shows, drugs and more accessible, audience-driven films. She specialises in both observational and glossy high end productions and makes them accessible, thought provoking and entertaining.
In her latest endeavor, an ESPN "30 for 30" feature doc titled “Stolen Gold”, she tells the story of Paralympian athlete Ramón Torres, as he re-lives the most shocking Paralympic fraud case in history. She has is also currently working as the Showrunner & Co-Exec Producer of the hit, premium Netflix show called “SPRINT” that showcases the world's fastest athletes as they go for gold at the Olympics.
In 2021-2022 she Series Directed a HBO Max Limited Series called “Flordelis: A Family Crime” about an evangelical pop star with 55 children, who turned MP and was embroiled in a thrilling, dark crime story.
During 2020 - 2021, Suemay directed two single drama documentaries at Raw TV for the hit Netflix series called “Catching Killers”. “Manhunter” is the story behind the search for Aileen Wuornos - America’s most famous female serial killer. “Body Count” uncovers the emotional toll on detectives investigating one of America’s most unique cases.
From 2017 - 2019 Suemay Produced and Directed an ambitious & unique 7-part series called ‘Killer Ratings (UK) ‘Bandidos Na TV (BRA) set in Brazil for Netflix Originals . It was Netflix’s first foreign documentary series. In 2020 it won a prestigious award for “Best Screenplay” and was nominated for “Best Documentary Series” at The Brazilian Cinema Academy. A true, fascinating crime story looking at a bizarre political scandal of a TV host accused in 2008 of killing for ratings. The Series Director was Daniel Bogado.
In 2019, she directed on Nutopia’s “Vendetta: True, Lies and The Mafia” a high profile, 6 part series for Netflix. At times, directing 5 crews shooting a live trial and filmed observationally journalists, lawyers and judges.
At the end of 2019 Suemay worked on “The Prince & The Paedophile” for Channel 4 looking at Epstein’s relationship with Prince Andrew and took an episode of the successful Netflix F1series ‘Drive To Survive’ made by the Producers of “Senna” into the edit.
In 2017, she joined the Oscar winning team at Lightbox - Simon and Jonathan Chinn and self shot and directed a one hour film about ‘Waste’ for the series 'Food Exposed with Nelufar Hedayat' - Series Edited by Suzanne Lavery.
In 2016, Suemay was instrumental in establishing a landmark BBC3 in house series on narcotics, ‘Drugs Map of Britain’ with Max Gogarty and Claire Hughes and directed the first two films for the strand. ‘Getting Off Mamba’ about a British community addicted to legal highs and ‘Heroin Haters’ looking at drug hierarchy.
During her time working for the award-winning Channel 4 "Unreported World" international strand I directed single films on right wing radio hosts in America, teenagers living underground in the Ukraine and the 'right to beauty' in Brazil. She has also focused on observational documentaries about iconic British institutions (C4's Liberty of London) and people facing rare, life changing conditions (Extraordinary People - World's Heaviest Man, Progeria: 6 Going on 60). The film “The Lion Cub From Harrods” got nominated for a Grierson in the ‘Most Entertaining Documentary Category” Recently my films have also explored the way terrorism is affecting our lives. One film for BBC’s Our World - ‘Destination Syria’ followed nine British Muslims on a ten day road journey from the UK to Syria to deliver ambulances and aid. Another 60-minute BBC film ‘A Nation Divided? – The Charlie Hebdo Aftermath’ looked how terrorism affects French Muslims and their notions of identity.
Suemay is hostile environment trained (July 2017) and comfortable directing large crews as well as self shooting my own material (C300/FS7/AS7/5D/Pana Eva)
I was born and grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and speak native Portuguese and English. My French and Spanish are fluent and my Italian is conversational.
